Immigrating to America as a teenager, I was anxious about not being accepted as a Chinese-American and chose to imagine myself as someone else. I ended up suffering for it. For this collection I wanted to create an imaginary world, one in which it’s considered a sin or crime to have identity or conscience. Being self-conscious, you will be put in prison and forced to play a mind game. The game doesn’t end until the prisoner has lost all of his or her identity. Without being literal, I focused on the functional and utilitarian parts of prisoner uniforms. This process led me to develop magnetic latex textiles. The flexible spikelike textures unexpectedly imitate the idea of edges.
